Houston is a city where there’s always something to do, particularly for visitors staying inside the loop or downtown. No matter where your interests take you—whether it’s seeing the sights, laughing until you cry, creating art while sipping wine or enjoying a happy hour with colleagues and friends—the city of Houston has you covered.
See the sights
Houston has many sights to see, especially for those visiting the city for the first time. Get to know the beautiful Bayou City better on one of its many tours on foot, by vehicle or by boat.
See the city on foot with four different walking tours from Houston Historical Tours. Each covers a different area and focuses on a specialty or theme. For all tours, guests walk four to five miles as they learn about architectural features and architects, usage of buildings and the history of Houston. Each tour lasts between two and four hours with a stop for lunch. Adding an optional MetroRail ride makes the tour five hours.
If walking isn’t for your group, Houston Historical Tours also offers several van and bus tours for groups that run from 2 to 10 hours. Basic tours introduce guests to the areas of downtown, the theater and museum districts, the former banking district, River Oaks and Rice Village. The tours also showcase points of interest like downtown stadiums; historic houses of worship, homes and cemeteries; the Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Center; City Hall; Discovery Green Park; Sam Houston Park; Freedmen’s Town; Rice University; and Hermann Park. Longer tours have additional sights and most include a lunch stop and bathroom opportunities. For information on walking or driving tours, call (713) 392-0867 or visit www.houstonhistoricaltours.com.
See Houston from a different angle on a private pontoon charter on Buffalo Bayou. Buffalo Bayou Partnership offers the Spirit of the Bayou pontoon boat that floats guests through downtown Houston along the historic Buffalo Bayou past Allen’s Landing, the redeveloped Sesquicentennial Park and Sabine Promenade or the historic McKee Street Bridge and the industrial side of Houston. Charter reservations can be made two weeks in advance for 15–21 people. Outside food and beverages are welcome, and trips last about 1.5 hours. A docent-led informational tour is available upon request. For pricing and availability, call (713) 752-0314, Ext. 4, or visit www.buffalobayou.org/boattours.html.
If learning about local history and the community fits your entertainment bill, consider one of these Houston tours and see what makes this city great.
