In this chapter of Meetings and Events Houston, you will find comprehensive listings of hotels and resorts that offer meeting and event space for many occasions. Since the last issue, we have worked diligently to add facilities that meet our high standards and offer the latest technology, world-class amenities and the exuberant spirit that Houstonians have come to expect from the hospitality industry. Houston Hotel Happenings
Renovations and new developments are in progress across the Greater Houston Region. From downtown to the Galleria, Houston hotels are working hard to set the bar even higher for meetings and events.
Meeting planners are raving about the top-to-bottom improvements that have been made to the
Crowne Plaza Houston North-Greenspoint and the
The Doubletree Guest Suites Houston by the Galleria. Both of these facilities have made updates that have touched virtually every aspect of the property.
The
Hyatt Regency Houston also recently completed a multi-million dollar renovation project that transformed all 960 guestrooms and included the addition of Shula’s fine dining steakhouse.
The
Magnolia Hotel is in the process of updating the grand lobby and bar area and the Hotel Icon completed renovations to their foyer and restaurant.
The Hilton University of Houston Hotel and Conference Center is getting a facelift too. Renovation is slated to begin in late fall, with completion targeted for December 2009.
All of Houston’s renovation projects have added to the overall appeal of the city. One thing that each undertaking has in common is the heightened attention that is being placed on “going green.”
The Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa is just one of the hotels that is taking part in this growing initiative.
There are also several new developments in Houston that are expected to add exciting backdrops for meetings and events. “New developments add to the variety of offerings in the city, providing more options for locals and more reasons for planners to stay in Houston for their next meeting or event,” notes Stuart Rosenberg of Studio Communications.
One such development is
The Sheraton Houston West Hotel, which is slated to open on October 29, 2008.
Another prime addition to the industry will be
Aloft Houston Galleria, a Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. brand, which is expected to open in July 2009.
The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center has announced it will embark on a comprehensive, $50 million transformation and expansion project to include the build out of 158 new guestrooms, a dramatic entrance and a fine-dining steakhouse.
There are numerous other new developments and ongoing renovations that are occurring in the Houston region. For more detailed information and updates on new properties, log on to

Houston has a Bright Future
Houston has a booming tourism and convention industry that has made new developments and renovations timely and practical. In the first half of 2008, Houston hotel occupancy averaged 68.8 percent, which is just half a point below last year in the same period. The small decline can be attributed to a reduction in nationwide non-convention business travel. However, the end of year figures and the projected figures for 2009 indicate that the Houston hospitality industry is thriving and will show growth for years to come.
“Thankfully, Houston’s lodging situation is very different than most of the country,” notes Chris Miller, regional director of sales and marketing, for the Hotel Icon. “While there have been pockets of time that have been softer than others, this has been a very good year locally up to this point. I think 2009 will be a little softer on the citywide front but I hope that it’s offset by a higher volume of business travel with a new administration in the White House.”
