Spotlight On: Norris of Houston Salon and Day Spa
“Keep America Beautiful…See Norris of Houston!” This slogan was made famous by Norris Womack, owner of Houston’s famed Norris of Houston Salon and Day Spa on Post Oak Blvd. More about relaxation than pretension, Norris of Houston is truly a dream within a dream.

A third-generation barber, Norris opened this sophisticated salon and day spa in 1959. Hailed by many as a pioneer in the industry, Norris of Houston Salon and Day Spa is a true testament to Norris’ willingness to evolve with the ever-changing times. Norris had the foresight to take the barber shop format to a new level by providing focused individual attention, prompt appointments, separate booths and master stylists. Norris’ vigor for life and bold approach to the typical salon format has resulted in a salon and day spa that exceeds client’s expectations.

“I have a keen desire to be unique,” notes Norris. “I’ve always figured that if I was going to do something, I should do it differently than those around me. I run my salon and day spa like I live my life, with passion and spontaneity.”

It is apparent that Norris is highly-respected and universally renowned as an innovator among his employees. “Norris does things that others are afraid to do and he does them with the attitude that each day should be lived to the fullest,” said Debbie Comeaux, Manager of the salon and day spa.Comeaux has worked with Norris since attending his barber school in 1977.

The unique décor of Norris of Houston is heavily-influenced by Asian art and architecture, complete with intricately hand-carved furniture, delicate chandeliers and other sumptuous delights. The 9,000-square-foot facility offers Japanese hair straightening, facials, nail and waxing services, massages, body treatments, oxygen treatments, threading, a myriad of makeup services and a sophisticated tooth whitening system. The salon and day spa caters to both men and woman clientele and offers many gender-specific packages. Norris of Houston also offers complimentary wine and spirits to its clients.

Every sweep of the cheek and comb of the hair is perfection at this full-service locale. Norris of Houston Salon and Day Spa has been featured in numerous publications including Esquire, Lucky Magazine, the New York Times, Houston Brides, the Houston Chronicle and Houston Magazine. It is consistently rated one of the “Top Ten Spas in Texas” on Citysearch.com.

Spas and other lifestyle-oriented programs have become a must-have for meetings and events. Norris of Houston welcomes groups for a day of rest, relaxation and rejuvenation with several package choices. Options at the salon range from 1 to 5 hours in length and can be customized to fit the needs of any group. “Now is the perfect time to pamper your secretary,” notes Samar Ismail, Events Director at Norris of Houston Salon and Day Spa. “We offer numerous packages that are perfect for Secretary’s Day or any day you want to recognize your assistant.”

Meeting planners and spa directors often emphasize that working within a tight budget or time frame doesn’t automatically prohibit members of groups from enjoying the spa experience. Spa treatments are no longer a privilege for the wealthy; everyone needs and can enjoy a little bit of pampering. As with every other aspect of a group program, a successful day spa activity requires detailed planning. Ismail offers several important tips for meeting planners who are considering incorporating a spa retreat into their meeting or event:
  • Do your research. Look for the best spas in your area. Consider location and reputation when making your decision.
  • Prepare specific information to discuss with your event planner. Spas need to know the expected number of guests, time allowances, attendee demographics and budget limitations.
  • Work closely with spa directors and experts. Spa experts are able to give realistic treatments that are right for the program theme, time guidelines and price restrictions. Also, it is important to coordinate the spa schedule with the time of day and goal of the meeting. Spa directors can offer many suggestions as to what treatments are good for first-timers and both men and women.
  • Ask about extras such as lounge areas and refreshments. Make sure to ask what is included in the price of the treatment, including any gratuities.
  • Offer options. Spa treatments can be very intimidating to some guests. It is crucial to offer a mix of services that are designed for both men and women. Offering options will make guests feel more comfortable and ensure a pleasant experience for all.
  • Many spas offer “signature services” to guests. Be sure to check with the spa about any specialties or highly-acclaimed treatments.
  • Norris of Houston Salon and Day Spa works with clients to ensure that the day of the event is reserved for relaxing. “We know that our guests are looking for a break from the boardroom and we are committed to providing just that,” notes Ismail. “We want our guest to feel pampered and refreshed.”

The success of Norris of Houston is written on the faces of clients as they look at their reflections with joy. “When you come here, you have to have fun,” says Norris about his salon and day spa. It is obvious that his staff and their clients take this sentiment to heart.
